Characters that have Alter Ego like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Case

(Might contains some sort of spoilers!!)

My friend in Facebook just showed me his drawing the other day. Which I commented that the drawing design is too badass and complicated. He said that the character is based on Mr. Hyde from the famous novel of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. When I googled it, the title piqued my interest. At first, everyone including me would ask if the novel genre supposedly a horror one or not. I usually stopped my curiosity when it comes to horror that I couldn't handle. But for some reasons, I decided to read the novel myself and play the game on google play store by MazM, which is pretty accurate to the novel. First, it's because the title is 'Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde'. The word 'case' actually made me wonder of the contents. Second, it's because of the year and settings of the novel is during the 18th century in London, where Sherlock Holmes era existed.

I figured out that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are one same person with a double life and double personalities. There are also other readers theories where he probably have two souls in one body, because of the term Dr. Jekyll used as supernatural. This theory is denied because Dr. Jekyll never suffers from an amnesia and always remembers what he did to people as Mr. Hyde form. After knowing this interesting story, I tried to list all of the character that probably shares the same idea as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story.

1. Launch (Dragon Ball)

Dr. Jekyll needs medicine to be able to transform into Mr. Hyde or the other way around. But Launch only needs to sneeze to be able to transform to her other self. It is unknown whether Akira Toriyama based this on that certain novel or not, but Launch character's design is called Good Launch and Bad Launch, which is the main plot of the novel, where Dr. Jekyll wants to separate those personalities.

2. Buu (Dragon Ball Z)

While Dr. Jekyll is busy trying to find a discovery of his experiments if he actually could separate good and evil personality or not, Buu used his ability called Fission (the opposite of fusion) to separate his personalities. Dr. Jekyll would be so happy if he could meet Buu I guess. Gohan would count as having split personality as well if he acts different as The Great Saiyaman, but Dragon Ball Super Episode 75 proves that Gohan is still Gohan in Great Saiyaman suit.
Goku: What are you doing Gohan?
Gohan: I am not Gohan! I am Pan's father, Videl's husband, also a scholar, but behind all that the true identity is The Great Saiyaman!
Goku: So you are Gohan right?
The English dub version act is pretty convincing though.

3. Marik (Yugioh)

Dr. Jekyll's very dependent on his medicine to trigger the transformation, but Marik transformed because of the evil Milenium Rod. Both transformed beyond their will and ended up killing a person. They said that Yami Marik is not born just because of Milenium Rod, but also through the pain engraved on his back. In Dr. Jekyll's case, the pain was probably from his status, fame, reputation, he wants freedom after all.

4. Ryo Bakura (Yugioh)

Eventhough Bakura has two split personalities in one body, everyone have to keep in mind that Bakura have both Ryo's soul and Thief King Bakura's soul, so basically, of course they would have different personalities as they are completely different person. But somehow people liked to compare Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde's case similar to Bakura and Ryo. Bakura's soul was in Milenium Ring, but for unknown reason Bakura could speak to Ryo when the Milenium Ring is in Yugi's possession that was stolen by Haga and Ryuzaki.

5. Yugi Muto (Yugioh)

You knew this was coming right? Same case like Bakura, he has both Yugi and Atem's soul in one body. Pharaoh's soul was in Milenium Puzzle. In Yami Yugi vs Yami Marik duel, Marik sets a Shadow Game where if they lose they sacrifice their other self to which Little Kuriboh made a joke about it in Yugioh Abridged Series Episode 61:
Yami Yugi: Yugi! You have your own body!
Yugi Muto: Marik must be using fanfic powers!
So probably Milenium Items have the power to separate their souls personality. Remember that Marik only have one soul, it's a bit weird if his soul is gone, his dark soul would be gone as well, since they are the same person just like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. If one dies, the other dies too. Interestingly though, according to Shadi, Yami Yugi's Milenium Puzzle represents both evil and justice. Pharaoh's evil in season 0, and justice in the future seasons, so does Pharaoh himself actually have two personalities?

6. Toko Fukawa (Danganronpa)

Unlike the others, Toko's psychological disorder came from natural way being mistreated as a child and continues living being bullied at school. Because of that, her deadly personality called herself Genocide Jack. Both are the same person because they liked and disliked the same thing. As for Mr. Hyde, he didn't care for family, friends, love, or money, but Genocide Jack does care for love similar to how Toko feels toward certain pretty boys (Byakuya for example). We are all quite sure she would kill at least someone, but she didn't (like for the entire Danganronpa series), which is surprisingly she also became major character and as an ally. Maybe she tamed Genocide Jack by meeting Byakuya? As for Alter Ego of Chihiro Fujisaki, it's only an artificial intelligent created after the same face and personality as him (oh dear, I almost refer him as her). So it doesn't count as split personality.

7. Ling Yao (Fullmetal Alchemist)

With Philosopher's Stone implemented in Ling's body, Greed resides inside his body. Interestingly, Ling means zero and Greed means his desires for everything, which is completely opposite. Ling learns about Greed and Greed learns about Ling, they started to influence each other. In the end, Ling insisted Greed to stay but Greed sacrificed himself to save Ling's body and died with no desires at all. Mr. Hyde doesn't care about anything at all like money, love, family, explaining his brutality, but Greed wants everything money, power, fame, everything else in the world. Mr. Hyde attacks people without consideration of their gender, meanwhile Greed doesn't want to attack women. Do you think the chemistry that Dr. Jekyll had been working on might actually be some sort of Philosopher's Stone?

8. Momoka Nishizawa, Oka Nishizawa, and Tamama (Keroro Gunso)

Oh look, what am I doing, cramming all 3 characters in number eight. I must've been such a pretty lazy blogger ever existed. No, the reason is because this is basically just a family of split personality. Momoka has a shy, sweet and kind personality where her other self is a brutal and strong personality. It is said that she has an episode where her two personalities could be separated. Her split personality is inherited from her mother. Tamama, her partner, bears the same split personality where she could be cheerful and happy while her other self is having much more heavy voice with some creepy face. I am starting to wonder if Momoka's father, Baio Nishizawa, could be Dr. Jekyll and did such experiments to the whole family... just kidding.

9. Seele Vollerei (Honkai Impact 3)

Seele has two personalities where she could be cute and caring, the other is scary that could torture anyone she desires. Seele in German means soul while Vollerei in German means gluttony / overindulgence. It's probably referring to her other personality. It's unknown where she got the personality, but probably due to the Honkai Energy of her Stigmata. Opposite of Mr. Hyde, Seele Vollerei evil self seems to like torturing more than killing (when she torture Sin Mal out of revenge for harming Bronya).

10. Assassin (Dragon Nest)

Illusion who claims to be the future self of the present Assassin, resides in his body resulting the character to be able to fight like Illusion does. But just like Dr. Jekyll, Assassin has the fear that Illusion might completely conquer his body one day. Illusion doesn't bear the evil like Mr. Hyde, because he is just a human, an assassin, from the future who goes to the past and resides in his present self body. He even fell in love with the girl named Lunaria, that he didn't want her to leave him behind. So far, this is probably the only split personality that came from the future. Dr. Jekyll is going to get a headache thinking about this time jumping too much since paradox is out of the logic.

11. Candace Flynn (Phineas and Ferb)

There is an episode of Candace personality got split by Phineas and Ferb's Molecular Separator Ray, creating Romantic Candace and Busting Candace. If I ever done a crossover fanfiction it would be like this:
Dr. Jekyll: Aren't you a little to young to be able to separate people personalities?
Phineas: Yes. Yes, I am.
That would be awkward.

12. Dr. Banner (Hulk)

Stan stated himself that Dr. Jekyll case takes part on the idea of making the character Hulk. They share the same story, a doctor who's doing an experiment. Just that Dr. Jekyll's doing it on purpose, while Dr. Banner got it by accident.
Dr. Banner: I put a bullet in my mouth and the other guy spit it out.

13. Ice Bear (We Bare Bears)

There is an episode titled 'I am Ice Bear' that features another personality of Ice Bear after all this time. The other personality is triggered by getting hit on his head. Panda said that Ice Bear is having an amnesia that cannot be treated. However they were able to return Ice Bear back to his normal self by getting hit again on his head. If Dr. Jekyll knows this, he would bang his head to the wall several times I guess.

14. Saeran Choi (Mystic Messenger)

From Another Story, we learned that Unknown a.k.a Saeran Choi, has another personality called himself as Ray. And he doesn't want to be called as Saeran no matter what. His other personality is created due to drinking Mint Eye's Salvation Elixir for years. But it's also known that Saeran and Ray could communicate with each other, telling MC that he couldn't take it anymore and transform himself to Saeran. While as Saeran, he said Ray is too kind and weak for him, blaming MC for the cause. If Dr. Jekyll knows this, he probably would have joined Mint Eye sooner or later to get that elixir.

15. Sakura Haruno and Ino Yamanaka (Naruto)

Sakura and Ino have the same type of inner self. Somehow this is the only picture with a black background so far, in order to be able to see their alter ego if you do observe. Their inner self is triggered whenever their team members are acting foolish, for example like Naruto, Chouji or Shikamaru as a genin. This case of alter ego would be considered as normal for all people, so their other selves are harmless, unlike Mr. Hyde who kills all people (losing rationalization).

16. Nina (Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva)

Nina is one of the candidate that was given eternal life by being a host for Melina's memory. Nina resisted when the Detragan inserted Melina's memory into her, creating an unsuccessful transfer. Her attitude changes in certain situations in the movie, because she consists 50% of Melina and 50% of Nina's own personality. Meanwhile, Janice doesn't count as split personality since she gave up on her personality for Melina so she could control her body freely. And this is the only split personality that created by planting someone else's memory who's already dead. Unless you count Yami Bakura and Yami Yugi as memories of dead people from the past, they didn't even remember their past, get the joke? Would Dr. Jekyll want to try this kind of experiment though? One more person, Alfendi Layton also has an alter ego.

17. Matt Engarde (Ace Attorney)

There are a lot of Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney characters that suffers 'Breakdown' in courtroom. And usually their attitude changes after. But in Matt's case, he could be called having a split personality. He spoke of his other self as a separate person, probably having identity disorder. His facade personality is weak and careless, meanwhile the real one is cruel and intimidating. That personality of his wasn't a breakdown, but more into revelation of his true identity. Until Shelly de Killer threatens him for breaking the contract, the real him finally having a breakdown (nervous). Now this one really fits Mr. Hyde but the one that doesn't want to get his hands dirty (hired an assassin to do the job).

18. Shinichi Kudo (Detective Conan)

If a medicine could turn Dr. Jekyll into Mr. Hyde as a what so-called beast, then there's a medicine now that could turn you into a child. Mr. Hyde is similar to Conan, trying endlessly to get back to their normal body. Maybe Ai Haibara brought the wrong salt for the APTX 4869 ingredients, like Mr. Hyde... just kidding. Anyway, I put him on the split personality (double life) list because in Detective Conan Movie 8: Magician of the Silver Sky, there is a scene of Conan being spoiled.
Conan: I want to go to!
Sonoko: You can't go.
Conan: I want to go I want to go I want to go!
Ran: Okay, everyone can go.
Genta: Don't you think Conan...
Mitsuhiko: He seems to be a whole different person around Ran-san.
Ayumi: At that age, boys act rather spoiled.
Genta: The brat is just like a kid.
Sonoko: (Aren't you guys kids, too?)

19. Kaito Kuroba (Magic Kaito)

In this case, Kaito has a double life, one as a student Kaito Kuroba, the other one is as Kaito Kid the Phantom Thief. Their personality is still similar, but as Kaito Kid, he is more arrogant in ego and sly when he is doing heist. Just like Dr. Jekyll, he has a butler, but Dr. Jekyll's butler never knew his master secret, while Kaito's butler knew his young master and previous master secret about the double life. The reason I added Kaito into the list is because in episode 219, when Jii is worried about his master safety, Kaito answered that tonight he isn't the student Kaito or young master Kaito.
Kaito Kid: Tonight I am the bad guy. So, do I fit the part?
Besides, Kaito is the master of conquering other people personalities, do you even realize it that Saguru Hakuba in movie 10 was in fact Kaito Kid in disguise? Who would've thought? Dr. Jekyll used Mr. Hyde to torture and kill people, while Kaito used Kaito Kid to become a thief (but actually returns it after!).

20. Danny Fenton (Danny Phantom)

Just another victim of laboratory accident that cause him to transform into a ghost. While everyone else seems to be adding a soul, Danny felt like decreasing half of his soul. Well, since he is half human and half ghost, does that mean half of him is dying? Nevermind, he lived a double life anyway, as a student and hero with completely different personality since it looks like Danny got more self-esteem and courage as a ghost and totally helpless as his human form. He is like Conan and Kaito, he has a secret to keep from others. The reason I consider Danny having a split personality is because that one episode called 'Identity Crisis' where Danny split himself into two, the human and the ghost to live separately with the help from his dad's invention. It didn't work out that well, but probably Dr. Jekyll wanted to meet Danny Fenton's dad for his invention, but Mr. Hyde is not a ghost, it wouldn't work, would it?

Now you have read all of the characters I mentioned, it might not be a perfect list, so I might add other characters if I happen to find more. Or you could help me by commenting on this post and discuss anything you want to comment about my opinion, I might be wrong, who knows. But if you want to discuss it privately or become friends with me, you can find me under the name of Haibara Kawaii on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter.

Before commenting, please keep in mind that we are talking about something that's similar to Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Not to be confused as twin characters like Dahlia Hawthorne and Iris, Ini Miney and Mimi Miney, Shiro Mokona and Kuro Mokona, Maru and Moro, Hideyoshi and Yuuko. And also not to be mistaken as counterpart like Tsubasa Li and Kimihiro Watanuki, Sonic and Shadow, Zetsu. Lastly, not be equated as fusion like Gogeta, Vegito, Gotenks.
